Covering the dining scene in and around the OC
Last year, we discovered SOL Cocina on Coast Highway in Newport Beach, a shining example of traditional Baja-style cuisine that’s fresh and fabulous. It’s loaded with old-world charm: plush leather booths, wrought-iron chandeliers, dark wood ceiling beams, an open kitchen with counter seating, and a marina view.
“Our menu reflects the Baja tradition and lifestyle,” explained our server. “Everything is simple, fresh and flavorful. It’s designed for sharing, because Baja is an adventure and adventures are best shared.”
With that, we began perusing the menu’s vibrant and exotic fare. Before we got very far, the bartender asked if we cared for a muddled cocktail from the specialty drink list. Of course, we gave him the third degree, asking about the 60 artisan tequilas they have to choose from and every possible combination of herbs, fruits, and juices.
We settled on the Cucumber Jalapeno Margarita: muddled cucumber, jalapeno pepper, Corzo Blanco tequila, lime juice and agave nectar.
We then tried a Blueberry Acai Margarita with Corralejo Blanco tequila, Veev Acai liquor, blueberries, fresh lime juice, and agave nectar.
We were very surprised by how refreshing and light those drinks were—although the Jalapeno Margarita finished with a kick!
We ordered dinner, which was sensational, but it was those tequila-based concoctions that really got our attention.
And here’s another thing that caught our attention: SOL is launching a monthly “Discover Tequila” tasting series, intended to serve as a relaxed, quick-format version of a full tequila dinner and specially designed for those who want to expand their knowledge of fine tequilas and food pairings.
In one hour, guests will taste and learn about Mexico’s finest tequilas (a different tequila will be featured every month), while enjoying innovative and original antojitos designed by Executive Chef Deborah Schneider to complement the featured tequila.
The inaugural event will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2011, featuring Partida Tequila and led by Sofia Partida. Priced at $29 per guest (excluding tax & gratuity), this special evening runs 7:30–8:30 p.m., with an 8 p.m. presentation by Sofia Partida.
