Pour a Glass of Fun at the Balboa Bay Club’s Wine Festival May 27 – 29

How sturdy is your palate?

Judging from the array of seminars, dinners and wine tastings being held Memorial Weekend (May 27 – 29) as part of The Balboa Bay Club’s 8th annual Newport Beach Wine Festival, you’ll need steel-lined taste buds to make it to all of the events.

We’re sometimes gluttons for gastronomic overdose, but with a festival of this size and scope, you need to be selective and give your palate the pleasure it deserves without going overboard.

Of course, that’s difficult to do when, over the course of three days, the Wine Festival presents eight signature events featuring six renowned chefs and sommeliers plus an amazing array of food and wine.

Among the many activities: a winemaker luncheon, wine tasting seminars, brunch, afternoon barbeque, and the ever-popular Grand Tasting held on Saturday night.

Master Sommeliers Ron Mumford and Ira Harmon will be on hand throughout the weekend to share their knowledge of wines and wine pairings.

We were lucky to get a preview from Chef Lageder of some of the food and wines being served over the weekend, and we can safely state that this is going to be an amazing Wine Festival.



Friday, May 27th

Wines and Cuisine from the Rivers of Europe

6:30 pm – 10:00 pm

On The Lawn and Beach at The Resort

Celebrate the wines from the Rivers of Europe, including the Loire, Rhine, Rhone, Rhein, Mosel, Douro and DanubeRivers. The Balboa Bay Club’s culinary team will prepare food stations and displays of imported and domestic cheeses and fabulous desserts.  An ice-sculpture Martini Bar and other beverages will be available.

Saturday, May 28th

Lobster Luncheon With Guest Chefs and Wine Pairings

11:30 am – 2:00 pm

Bay Club Grill 

Guest Master Sommeliers Ron Mumford and Ira Harmon pair wines to a magical lunch-time menu of Lobster. BBC Executive Chef Josef Lageder and Chef Krisztian Karkus, along with guest Chefs Frederic Castan from St. Regis Monarch Beach and Pierre Albaladejo of Park Hyatt Aviara, will prepare an amazing mid-day experience with Lobsters from various regions.

Seminar: The Pinot Noir Challenge

3:30 pm

West Coast Pinot Noir vs. Burgundy Pinot Noir will be the subject of this seminar, led by Master Sommeliers Ron Mumford and Ira Harmon. Wines will be hand selected by the experts, and discussed by participants.

Seminar: Cocktail Class with Celebrity Mixologist David Nepove

5:00 pm

Participants will learn how to make “classic cocktails” for entertaining at home. Learn the little “tricks of the trade,” garnishes, and glassware that will ensure unique and delicious cocktails at home.

The Grand Tasting

7:00 pm – 10:30 pm

The Grand Ballroom

More than 60 wineries from around the world (including Chateau Montelena, Caymus, Ampelos Cellars, Far Niente, Ferrari-Carano, Justin Vineyards, Joseph Phelps, Grgich Hills, Kobrand, and many more) will be present to pour their wines, including Estate and Reserve bottles typically found only at the winery. Pair wines with a wonderful selection of seafood, delightfully prepared meats, specialty cheeses and decadent desserts as you watch some the chefs preparing treats. Discuss your favorite wine with a Winemaker or Master Sommelier and enjoy live music all evening long.


Sunday, May 29th

European Breakfast Buffet

11:00 am – 1:30 pm

The First Cabin Restaurant

Enjoy a traditional European breakfast buffet with breakfast favorites created by Austrian born Executive ChefJosef Lagederin a breathtaking bay front setting.

Barbeque and Big Red Wines

4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Bay Front Lawn

This causal setting is perfect for guests to enjoy a selection of big red wines, micro-brew beers, and rustic BBQ cuisine. Perfect for the whole (adult) family.

Cigars, Cognacs, Spirits & Sweets

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Duke’s Place Terrace and the Library Patio

Enjoy a late-afternoon of relaxation with great hand-rolled cigars, cognacs, Scotches, ports, tequila, specialty cocktails, cheeses, and of course desserts.
